The plumber tried to sell me an organic drain cleaner called Bio-Rooter. Does anybody have any experience (good or bad) with this product?

Contrary to your other commentor, Yes, "Bio-Rooter" and the half dozen other similar products under different names DOES work under certain conditions.

What it WILL DO:

It will definitely keep your pipes from building up matter that accumulates naturally over time which narrows the width of your pipes. It is full of enzymes and live "good" organisms that are usually activated by adding warm water to the powdery granulated product.

The organisms and enzymes eat away at hair, grease (which lines the pipes and keeps building up like cholesterol in your arteries), food, tissue etc.

It is EXCELLENT for keeping your pipes cleaned out and helps like no other product to prevent clogs and backups (with the exception of tree roots).

What it will NOT do is quickly, and that's the opperative word--quickly unclog a clogged pipe or drain. It can and will unclog a clogged drain, but for a severly clogged drain, it will take a full day of about 3-5 applications.

Therefore, this product is intended to keep the plumber away and is used as a maintenance tool. We have used it for about 12 years now and have NEVER had the plumber back. We re-supply ourselves with it from either Home Depot or Lowes in the plumbing section and we use it once a month in all of our sinks.

Your plumber did you a favor and not himself by recommending the product. I would say your plumber was more than ethical on your behalf.

He was trying to sell you an exzyme drain cleaner. Probably at a high price. You can buy Draincare by Zep at Home Centers for about $10. Enzyme cleaners cling to clogs and eat them. Same way a septic tank works. Enzyme cleaners do not work on tree roots. Most products don't, even though they state that they do.

We are everywoman. We are teachers, doctors, librarians, poets, authors, chefs, waitresses, business women, business owners, artists, magicians, cookie moms, grandmothers, aunties, and the lady next door. The question you ask is interesting, in that there is a mental picture in people's minds of mothers as "other" than they, somehow lesser, different, and separate, isolated. We are forever stuck in the minds of people as the frightened young women, teen mothers, or young and unsupported, and that is how we remain...forever. However, you have to ask who benefits from this vision of mothers as others? Clearly it is not the mothers themselves who benefit, nor the adoptee. The industry gives the APs the idea, to make it simple to get them to ease their conscience and collude with the agency to obtain an infant for adoption. However, it is the Adoptive parents who keep that otherness in their minds. It is simple to keep the child of some woman who is a crackwhore, a slut, a druggie or an alcoholic or a young woman who is young and frightened and alone and unsupported by family or friends. Then it is a humane thing that they are doing. It is saving a child from a lesser life. It is saving them from the "Otherness"...the industry promotes that separation, but the adoptive parents embrace it! I think that is one reason why the aps are so upset and often interfere so much in the reunions between adoptees and their natural parents. They have convinced themselves of the "otherness" of the mothers and are greeted by the lady next door, someone that they could be friends with under other circumstances, and who is often their equal or better socially, economically, educationally and in other ways. The otherness is lifted, and they are faced with the truth that the mothers of their children, who often was coerced into surrender, which they often were aware of and were party to, are simply women, just like they are....

BE CAREFUL OF GREEKS BEARING GIFTS. Why would a plumber try to sell you a product that would put him out of business ?
I suspect that he is getting a good comission for flogging this product.

I tried it once and the fumes did a number on my throat and lungs. It may be me but the product has all kinds of warnings on the side of the bottle but the internet never mentions this
