George Bernard Shaw once said, "Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it."
Blind pride in ANYTHING (whether it's where you happen to be born, the color of your skin, or a religious symbol that's been thrust upon you since you were born) is not only silly - it can be dangerous.
There's nothing wrong with being proud of your country - just think about why, because no country is perfect (no matter what the flag wavers say).
Above all else: think for yourself, and don't take pride in something just because people tell you that you're "supposed to." That's one reason to be proud of your country - it's a place where you can speak your mind, even if it goes against the majority.
Good luck on your essay.

Because I have freedom and rights that people in other nations can only silently fantasize about, we have the best military in the world, we have many luxuries, and we have a flag with a lot of meaning as well (especially after the September 11th attacks.)
There's hundreds of other reasons, but you're not writing a book, so those should get you at least a page and a half if you go into deep detail.

i am canadian just to let you know.. but i suppose americans and candians are somewhat the same...i think that Kayla D had some good points but instead of phrases like "americans have freedom that other countries can only fantasize about" and "we have the strongest military in the world" try saying something like " i am so fortunate to live in a country where i am fully able to access all of the basic human rights" or " my country is full of pride and we are capable, as a whole, of supporting eachother in times of need" i think that these phrases just sound more professional/sophisticated and not ego-maniac
as i said, i am canadian and both canadians and americans are somewhat the same...but the difference is really the way in which we think about things. just scroll back up for an example.

I am proud to be an American. Period. Anyone needing a reason to be proud of being an American is missing the point.
