TSS doesn't come from tampons directly. It comes from leaving dirty tampons inside your body for so long that bacteria start to grow inside you, and then that bacteria makes you sick. Using a 4 year old tampon wouldnt be any different than using a 4 year old pad. If it keeps you clean and doesnt leak, then go for it. Just change it every time you go to the bathroom like you would a normally.

As long as they are still wrapped there is no additional risk of TSS.
