Modesty in my view is not natural..... our ego does not let us be modest..... more often, our modesty is hypocrisy... the truly modest person would be suffering from lack of self-esteem...... I believe that the truly American value (which is mostly driven by the principle of maximizing freedom to be our natural self) does not advocate modesty.

However, if you mean humility (meaning recognizing our weaknesses and shortcomings and accepting them in order to strive for improving ourselves), then it is neither hypocrisy nor lack of self-esteem.... yet humility too is not natural because our ego invariably prevents us from seeing and recognizing our weaknesses and shortcomings for what they are.

In summary, I believe that modesty is hypocrisy and humility a virtue, but neither of them is natural.... the former is cultivated behavior and the latter is cultivated attitude.

You know what, we all are modest by nature.
Lifes experiences tends to take away that modesty, but we have to work on it to keep it.
