In terms of opportunities that await and dreams to be fulfilled, the best years of our lives are when we are young and dreaming those big dreams.
As we grow older and enter our teen years, we start to learn more about who we are more than what we are to become. Sure, some of that plays on our psyche, but during those turbulent times of dating, acne & sexual awakening (puberty), coupled with daily schoolwork, sports & other afterschool activities, we learn more about who we are ... which eventually plays in what we are to become.
So, no longer dreaming of becoming an astronaut, or a world famous mountain-climber, we start to face the realities in our world and set our sights on goals within our immediate reach: what am I going to study?, where am I going to college?, who will I take to the prom?, where can I get a job (if not going to college)? & what can I do for the rest of my life?
Before, During & After college we start to become more aware of ourselves and our needs for the future & adjust our goals accordingly: what courses do I need to take to get a degree in XYZ?, what kind of woman/man do I want to date, mate & make my life partner (marriage)?, what company should I work for in establishing myself in a particular career field? And so on ...
I propose, the best years of our lives, are when we didn't have a care in the world, we had our noses wiped for us (and our backsides), we still had all our dreams yet to be fulfilled, the world lay before us as an open slate of who we are or what we were to become. We could become an astronaut right then & there, just by using our imagination and perhaps a used carboard box!
Those were the best years of our lives!!!

I, too, am hoping the best is yet to come....I think my best years so far were around the time I was 18 and 19. I went to college at 20 and it all went downhill from there.

I was always very "career oriented". After college, I had great jobs, my own little apartment , my independence, my freedom.
Today, I am a mother of two, a great job, a great apartment, my independence and freedom AND EXPERIENCE, to be a better person. I guess, now at 38, I feel very good about my life as it has always been.

In totality, all my life has been very good. Enjoying life more now in my mid-fifties even though you know you are in the later years of your life.
Any year is a good year above ground and being warmer than room temperature.
