I am writing a paper on the portrayal of sexualized images of women in American culture and media for my Human Sexual Behaviour paper.

I think it is interesting that many American's express outrage at Janet Jackson's nipple or Britney Spears etc., but seemingly most female sports broadcast on television have women wearing revealing clothing with many gratuitous close-ups of breasts and butts. Anyway, it seems as though the prevailing theories are sports and television are male dominated and thats what they want to see, women just like to show off their bodies more nowadays, and wearing next to nothing is more comfortable.

Women and men are both encouraged to respond

BTW, the main sports I am talking about are volleyball, gymnastics, track and field, and aerobics, yoga, pilates etc. on TV.

I find woman appealing whether fully clothed, partially clothed, or naked although thats irrelevant.

There has been rule changes that REQUIRE the bottoms on volleyball players to angled up to reveal hips and some buttocks and also the waist band MUST be less than 1 inch. I don't see how that optimizes performance. Spandex shorts that indoor players wear are banned for outside. What reason is that, for maximal air circulation? Please!

Why should it follow that tight-fitting, flexible, nonbinding clothing "sexualizes" the female form, rather than clothes it appropriately for athletic performance?

I don't agree that sports broadcasts focus on breasts and busts. I just don't see that.

Volleyball is a beach sport. All the other sports you mention require the type of clothing I describe above for maximum performance.

Why should you think that is somehow titillating? Do you have an agenda, or are you some Victorian throwback?

Female athetes wear clothing that is functional for the sport in which they participate. The athlete has no control over the actions of the camera operators who seek gratutious shots of T & A.
Television production and success in athletics are mutually exclusive.
In writing your paper, it will be important to keep these issues separate.

I've wondered about that myself. I don't know if the athletes actually enjoy wearing such outfits. If anything, they've gotten much skimpier over the years. I really don't see the point in having the track and field athletes wearing midriff baring outfits. I think the longer shirts and looser fitting shorts they used to wear did the job just fine. I don't know about anybody else but the skimpier outfits make me a bit uncomfortable. The athletes are supposed to show off their athletic skills, not their bodies.

good as for tennis - men put on shorts - I'd ought to agree it is extra of a tradition factor that the gals put on shorter shorts. As to dancers - generally men will become a member of the gals in tights because the get dressed code for a distinctive sort of dance dictates. Often whilst dressed in lengthy (or quick) attire a gal could also be required to make use of just a little of modesty - hence the tights. Figure skating - good might be you'll Google "skating gown historical past" and let us know? But I am considering culture and "intercourse attraction" goes to be the reply.

Male athletes were naked in the first Olympics, I think our uptight body shyness is getting the best of us.
Those of us who live at the beach don't even notice.
