I am a die-hard Red Sox fan and despise the Yankees. That being said, I have the utmost respect for Torre as one of the greatest managers in the game and it was a travesty how they treated him. I'm glad he turned them down. They definitely need him more that he needs the Yankees. I sincerely hope he will manage again.... hopefully in the NL!

I'm an Orioles fan who's always liked the Sox and hated the Yankees, so I'm an indirect Sox fan. I don't think Torre is a baseball genius but he was the right man for the job, and obviously it's a job very few managers can handle for long. I think he should have announced his resignation at the end of last year after he basically got a no-confidence vote, but obviously he was good at taking crap from ownership.
I agree with the previous posters about his class. For example, he didn't condone A-Rod's yelling at the Toronto infielders with a fly ball in the air. I don't know all the details about the protocol, but the Yankees visited Boston the first day of the 2005 season and there was some ceremony with a championship banner. Torre made sure the team was properly respectful. Maybe he saw it as a motivational tool, but I was impressed when he said that Boston should be recognized for their achievement, and his team should do its part. I've got to respect a man who can be that honorable.

I am an avid Red Sox fan and like all others, do not care too much for the Yankees as a team. However, I do respect Joe Torre as a manager of the game. I believe that he is one of the best in the league. By not excepting the contract, I believe he did what was best. Why take a contract from a franchise that doesn't want you there? Even though he gave in, I think he did what was best for him. He deserves to be treated better than how they treated him. Yes, the Yankees showed some class in 1999, but what happened after that? Hopefully, we will see him coaching a team that gives him all the respect that he deserves and realizes that they need him more than he needs them.

I am a Cleveland Indians fan, so the Yankees aren't exactly my favorite team. I respect Joe Torre to the utmost and believe he is part of the Yankee dynasty. When I think New York Yankees, three things come to mind: George Steinbrenner, Derek Jeter, and Joe Torre.
If I were a Yankee fan born and raised, I'd be pissed at Steinbrenner for putting Torre through this.

As much as I hate the Yankees (being a sox fan) I do respect Joe Torre. I think this offer was a slap in the face to one of the greatest mangers in baseball. I'm glad he turned it down because he can do better. I've heard a prediction that he may sign with the Mets.

Met fan, married to a Yankee fan, descended from a long line of Red Sox fans.
I have tremendous respect for Joe Torre. I applaud his decision, and the Yankees should retire his number on opening day in the new park.

I am neither a fan of the Yanks or the Sox. But Torre was what the Yankees needed. A little class to offset the childish behavior of the owner. But it is obvious the child won. He was absolutley jealous of Torre becasue he was so popular and has been gunning for him for years. Not out of the job, out of jealousy. He has backstabbed Torre even when they were winning World Series.

Joe Torre is one of the classiest managers around. He made that Yankee team what it was back in the late 90's. I don't mean talent wise, I mean personality wise. As much as I hated that team, it was professional and classy and that is why they won so many times. Tell me how many managers could have treaded water like he did this year, with his 200+ million dollar payroll underacheivers 17 games back? He kept that team together and calm and that is why they came back the way he did. He knows how to handle egomaniac players like A-Rod and Jeter. There is no panic really in that man. He has my respect and the Yankee management low balled him with that one year offer and a salary cut from from his previous contracts. I am glad he told them to go screw.

Joe Torre has more class in his little finger then the Steinbrenner's have in all 3 of their worthless bodies. It will be nice to see Torre appreciated for the great manager he is somewhere else. It won't take him long to get hired. As a Red Sox fan I would love to see Francona fired and Torre hired on the Sox!
