Okay, I'm carving my first pumpkin this year and I want it to be really nice. I've got a stencil and everything, but I had a question about how I'm supposed to cut the top of the pumpkin. All the websites I've been to said to carve the top into a hexagon, so it doesn't fall in, but I still think it might fall in. Is there any other thing you can do while carving the hexagon to make sure the pumpkin top doesn't fall in???

Thanks for taking the time to read this! :)

You can cut it round, or any shape. What causes the top to fall in is shrinkage, when the top, being far smaller, loses moisture at a faster rate and becomes smaller than the opening. To prevent this, cut the top at an angle. Hold the blade at a 45 degree angle to the skin as you cut into the pumpkin, toward the center, and maintain that angle all the way around.

Angle the knife towards the center of the pumpkin as you cut out the top so the sides of the top are not straight up and down.

Make the cut at an angle, it will be impossible for the top to fall in. Have fun! And Happy Halloween!

Just angle the cut inwards so it forms a wedge.

let your imagination fly... don't cut it the hexagonal way... cut it circular... it will be more safe and fun... it is cute alos... goodluck! try also to put little carvings on the side to add shape to it...
