I have Vista home premium and I have tried most of the free antivirus programs and have come back to AVG antivirus as it works really well and doesnt slow my machine down at all like most of the others, and I would also recommend AVG antispyware as you really need a few of the antispyware to protect you, I also have Spybot and Spywareblaster and Threatfire which is like an early warning signal to let you know if anything unusual is happening to your computer. I have Zone Alarm firewall which works really well (make sure you get the one from www.download.com) as that has the Vista compatible one. These are all free from www.download.com and very popular and well used. Good luck!

Greeting,
Zonealarm is a great firewall, Avast, and AVG are great free antivirus. But if you are interested in free software I always stop by:
http://bearbottoms1.com/
and check out his recommendations. This guy has pointed me to some great free programs. And he has a couple of different firewall and antivirus programs he recommends. Good luck.

in case you easily must have free, then i might want to assert AVG is your perfect wager. although, AVG isn't a firewall. the perfect firewalls are hardware ones; as in, a router. yet once you'll need free, Black Ice Defender is tremendous.

There are many good and free anti-viruses available. I will recommend either Avast! Home edition or AVG Free edition, both are very good.

As per firewall, there isn't any need of downloading anything as the Windows Vista Firewall is excellent with 2-way protection facility! Just switch in on from Control Center.
Windows Vista also comes in-built with the Windows Defender anti-spyware, you should activate and use it too.
Keep all your security software updated and active all the time. Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall as it can cause major driver conflicts.
:)
