Actually, they are not related at all - they just share certain characteristics that define them as 'cichlids'. Malawi cichlids evolved completely independent from the cichlids of any other region, and the biotope is highly unique, nothing like the soft, planted, riverine waters of Angel fish, or the labratory aquariums of the hybrid parrot cichlid.

Malawi cichlids themselves comprise a group of fish ranging from a couple of inches to a nearly a couple of feet long and - from rock dwelling algae grazers to open water predators, from mild to hostile, and can't be clumped together as one generalization. Some might 'work out' with the other two types, others may kill them, but it's never an ideal mix.
