Once the chrome coating has come off, the only thing I know to do, is to replace it. Take the old one out and install a new one.

Goyo is right yuo need to buy a new tail piece not a hard job to change , Plumbers putty, slip plyers, is about all you need 20 min, tops, Get some new compresion rings for the tail piece

For Sale...... Genuine chromium plated plastic handbasin plugs !
Forget it , go out and buy genuine chromium plated BRASS plugs, believe me they are still available at good plumber's merchants.
If the actual fitting in the basin has lost it's plating, then call a plumber to have it replaced, it's a bigger job than you think.
