Thank you all for your answers. I am here and listening...well, tuning in intermittently. I'm trying to turn some old shelving into a raised bed for growing vegetables in the Spring. What do you all think I should grow?

Good Idea Brainz: although I'm not sure I have enough sunshine for tomatoes. I'm allowed to move the beds if I grass them over but my landlord has dug his heels in and told me I apsolutely can't steal any more of his lawn. (Really I just want to turn the whole damn garden into an allotment: What use are grass and concrete to anyone? Anyway, here I am, blasting the neighbours with "The Classic Experience" and wondering where my housemate's gone...I've just been to check he hasn't topped himself: if he has, he did it some other place than here - which is good, cause I can't do with corpses littering the place!!)
