Well, the number of active colonies or mounds can possibly be located and given an approximated number (though that would be difficult as ants have colonized almost every landmass on Earth) but I doubt if there is any way to count the red ants individually. They could mound up to six feet under the ground and could spread rapidly so counting would be extremely a difficult task.
Anyway, red ants population in general could possibly be more than what one can think of. Just think of a threatening red ant called "Fire Ant" ,which was allocated with a multi million dollars funding for the program to eradicate them. How many red ants could be involved?
Speaking of ants in general, they could monopolize 15-20% as the average of the terrestrial animal biomass.
