Compassion is one type of love. There are a few things that could come under the heading "Love." Romantic love is usually thought of as somewhat "less noble" than compassion because compassion involves a non-attachment to the results. (Generally, people want romantic love returned.) Compassion is sometimes called "loving-kindness" to indicate its platonic nature which you can feel for every other human being. It requires nothing in return.

I'd say compassion. Compassion determines you to shift your perspectives and see things through the perspectives of others without really needing to face their situations. Even though both take time and effort to be developed (not to mention properly applied), love can be automatic and guided by native features and instincts while compassion is the root of humanity. Like the first poster mentioned, compassion establishes a conscious decision therefore it's about choices, and choices define human nature more than native abilities.

In my view, undoubtedly compassion which is an extension of love to encompass all beings without bias and prejudice. Love to another being or a few others is limited and creates a favorable bias towards the chosen one or selected few, which has the potential to harm or afflict others if and when a situation like that arises. Love is better than utter selfishness since it broadens the definition of self to cover the beloved too.... but it still draws a limiting circle around the chosen few... compassion is further broadening of love to cover one and all irrespective of any relationships or other factors..... compassion being limitless, genuinely removes the restricting circle we draw around ourselves.
Love after all is a kind of emotion and therefore has its drawbacks. Compassion is a state of mind rather than any emotion and it brings balance and tranquility rather than excitement or agitation. Love can cleanse our mind partially with respect to our thoughts and actions apropos the loved ones only, whereas compassion can do it totally in all our thoughts and actions apropos everyone else. There is an equity and justice is compassion which is not quite possible in love.

deep, baby, deep. i'd say compassion. love is easy. love happens, like a virus. compassion, that takes effort. a conscious decision to put oneself in another's shoes, to place oneself behind another. Love can be obsessive, or spread like a bad rash, but compassion has to be a choice to be made over and over.

I would say compassion . humans are so quick to judge and condemn before we even understand the whole situation.

Compassion in the Hebrew language if i may put it in LAYMAN words comes from your inner parts,...your stomach for instance,...you feel it on a physical level on many occasion where it swells up inside your spirit when you feel for someone......this is where the term comes from IN TH E OPPOSITE SENSE...'You have no guts'.....or no drive no will, no passion if i may put it....Now love is a verb..........this word demands action........Have you heard this statement from any one particular........Don't tell me you love me....show me that you LOVE ME!........Huh..this is true....... for LOVE demands action.
Once compassion is established in ones spirit for another or a cause then Love which demands action will follow........This is the perfect one two combination ever!

tough!
but when i think of it, love comes as an answer...you see, compassion is part of love. you couldn't say you completely love a person without caring, without understanding...
some might find this cliche, it is because the word love has really no definition and its scope is way beyond our understanding. therefore, love shouldn't be boxed nor put parameters in it. when you care, you are loving, when you are compassionate you are loving.
am i making sense?! LOL!
