I guess most of the questions are of the type you mentioned.
They try to find shortcuts. There are some who ask how to type on a calculator some question. They don't want to think at all. You can see from the questions that they don't even know what are the problems about(by their fool mathematical language) .You can see how they ask their homework to be solved by others. That is sad because they will not learn this way.
There are others, maybe a minority, who show that they worked on problem and they ask for guidance. That is acceptable and a good thing. It shows that they are interested in what they are doing.
I wonder how much do they learn form this internet help. It would be more helpful if they would study their notebooks and manuals in first place. Though it has some qualities.
You asked a good question and you are not the first asking it.
"the answerer gets to practice. but at the same time, helps the asker to maybe eventually fail, in the long run"
you are right
A good way is to give hints to asker, not to solve all the problem.
Some use this strategy.

Well, at first I always answered those, because they were easy points - now i just can't be bothered, and I on;y come on occasionally to see if there's some particularly interesting q.
But it can help them in some cases, say if they haven't fully understood the working out, or how to do the q.
On the other hand, you're right that they should learn them for themselves.
And to Sai: You're completely wrong. School is about learning, not pleasing the teachers. Will they matter in 10 years? You're taught that because it's necessary in a lot of applications in society. The actual answer is irrelevant, other than to show that you could do the computations correctly, without which your education is pointless.

Isn't the point of yahoo answers to be able to have a forum of discussions of any kind? I think its a great tool for people to use if they need help with any sort of question, whether or not they just want answers. I think whenever you come across a question and you don't approve of what you think the motive of the asker is you should move onto a new question. If you dislike their questions so much you create new ones about it, you probably shouldnt bother with their questions at all.

yeah cos I'm a smart*rse. Anyway, most Maths problems require you to show how you got to the answer so they still have to work all of that out.

you see.. the ultimate goal is to get the answer.. it doesnt matter how you got it as long as it's right... if you ask me i hate all the definitions in maths... so boring... especially limits and differentiation...
