"The Angkasawan program is an initiative by the Malaysian government to send a Malaysian to the International Space Station on board Soyuz TMA-11. Angkasawan is the Malay word for astronaut.

This program has both scientific and technological objectives, but is also conceived as inspirational.

The four finalists were:
Siva Vanajah
Mohammed Faiz Kamaluddin
Faiz Khaleed
Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor

Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was the Malaysian crew member who eventually took part in the October 10 launch, while Faiz Khaleed served as his backup.

Sadly, the entire Malaysian space program has been criticized as a waste of money for a developing nation that could ill afford such indulgences."
