In Communism ALL of the means of production (manufacturing) and property (homes, apartments) are owned in common, as well as public services, and managed by the government, or 'commune'.

In Socialism only the public services are owned by the government, such as transportation (Airlines) or energy production (Utilities) or telephone services.

There is a BIG effort to muddy the waters in American politics and pretend that Socialism is defined as a federal government collecting taxes and providing services to the public.

This would make the ancient Roman Empire Socialist as well as every government on the planet.

Nothing. All socialism eventually becomes communism. It is the nature of socialism. Communism is an evil and atheistic politico-world view with a goal of wiping out all religion, eliminating the "class system", eliminating personal liberties and personal choices. Because everything is state owned with everyone getting paid the same amount for different work, socialism can never work and people lose their basic freedoms. Without freedom or personal liberties life is not worth living. Free countries have a duty of not only preventing the spread of communism but destroying it wherever it is.

The U.S. democratic party has a socialist agenda with prime examples being socialized health care, elimination of free speech via hate crimes laws and the "fairness doctrine", eliminating prayer in schools, taking away private property in the name of environmentalism, an unfair tax code that punishes you with higher tax rates for making more money etc etc. The democrats presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, is a known socialist and has said things such as,"I'm going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good" and "unfettered freedom is the greatest danger facing mankind". The democrats are just as dangerous as any of our communist enemies and must be stopped just as urgently.

Damn close to it! In both the government controls the distribution of the goods. In socialism, you have minimally more freedom. You may vote, and attend church but your initiatives to succeed are suppressed by knowing you are not allowed to flourish. Everyone lives in mediocrity. May easily slide into communism.
Communism on the other hand is totalitarian. No freedoms in this classless state headed but a dictatorship. There is no vote, no freedom of speech. Immorality and atheism abounds. The people are very poor and at the mercy of the goverment.

They are very different.

SOCIALISM is a belief that the society has an obligation to assist those of its number who, for whatever reason, are not able to provide the basics of a civilised existence for themselves. It is at least as successful a model of social organisation as the "pay for it yourself" systems that tend to leave the less well off in the gutter.

COMMUNISM is a totalitarion political philosophy that has been found a complete failure.

Socialism is economics. Communism is politics.

Communist governments control nations that have primarily socialist economic policies.
