torre has probably got more money stashed away than he knows what to do with...and with the way he has been treated by the Yankees...if I had his cash...yes I would had....because that contract was a slap in the face. It wasnt about the money..it was a way that the Yankees could try and skip out on him and make him look like the bad guy. but as most Yankee pr deals go it will fall flat on its face...Joe Torre deserves a lot of credit for the success of the yankees...and Mr Steinbrenner might just find out how much he does!!

If I had already achieved financial security for myself, my wife and my kids at a level well beyond my wildest dreams and taking that $5 million meant sacraficing my dignity AND I knew that upon my turning down that money I would immediately be offered hundreds of offers to earn huge sums of money for a lot less grief -- then yes, I would turn it down.
Joe Torre now stands as the most beloved and respected man in American sports. I don't think he has a damn thing to regret.

Torre's set for life -- he got something like $7 mil for this season, and close to that before. He's got to have at least $30 mil in his pocket already (I don't see him doing a MikeTyson and bloing it all in a hurry). He's 68 years old -- I don't think the money matters to him.
Anyway, I predict he'll get picked up by some other team for considerably less than the Yankees were offering.. a classy way to send a message of "%@&^# you!" to the Yankees.

If I were already a multi-millionaire I wouldn't work for the Steinbrenners for $50 million a year.
To be even asking this question you must be uninformed or blinded by loyalty to the Yankees. It's obvious they wanted to get rid of him but couldn't bring themselves to fire him, so they insulted him with a huge pay cut and a one-year deal, knowing he would turn it down. It's a disgrace, and I hope a few million bandwagon fans realize it and stop worshipping this slimeball organization.

This is yet another asinine question....why does it even matter? No one here is Torre. The circumstances surrounding that deal were specific to him. And I'm certain you would pick the lint out of your belly button for $5 a season.

George Orwell once described freedom as having the right to say "No"
The greatest single thing that wealth provides is the freedom to do or not to do the things that one wants to do.
Joe Torre is a wealthy man and as such he had the freedom to say "No" to an organization that no longer respects him -and so he did.
