The question you have raised here is a basic one and at the same time very very difficult to give a satisfactory reply. To get a least satisfactory answer you will have to accept certain believes and at the same time pl look around for yourself as well as others. For every action there is a reaction. What you are sowing now you are going to reap later.
You observe that many people are simply sitting idle yet they are enjoing the life. Some other people struggle hard to even to maintain themselves. You also observe that ''good'' people are suffering where as those always do harm to others are found to be happy.Sometimes people are not even having a lenghy life to reap for the 'Good'' and ''BAD'' acts. What are the reasons for these disparities.
When espeacially you are in distress you will be wondering what bad things or harmful acts you ''DID'' for your present sufferings. At this extreme position you will search for the answer elsewhere. At this glorious moment as informed earlier you will start believing in certain things/beliefs.One such a belief is the ''karma theory'' according to which you and you are only responsible for your happiness and sufferings which are nothing but the results for your ''good and ''bad '' acts done earlier. It is likely that the span of ones life may not be sufficient enough for reaping the consequences for the actions done earlier, which probably is passed on to the next birth.
THEREFORE IF ONE AGREES THAT THERE IS A NEXT BIRTH THEN THERE IS EVERY POSSIBILITY FOR THE ONE TO PERFORM ''GOOD '' Acts only in his present life so that the society will be benefitted.
The second part of your question also requires certain amount of faith and believes. Please define yourself ,what do you mean by '' I ''. I personally believe that i am not made up of atoms and molicules alone, I am something more than that. That more is called ''ATHMA'', ''I''-ness is not the body because body is an enert matter and after ones death the dead body is not called by the name of that person but on the other hand it is called a ''dead body'' or corpse as the ''life'' in a living things goes out which is called death. In the ''HINDU'' philosophy the life or conciousness is called the athma dwelling in the body. The karma theory and rebirth theory may provide answers to your present question. There are many learned persons are there to give proper guidance,If so pl .choose correct person.

I believe in the next life and I believe in past lives. I believe in reincarnation. We are all of us on the path to being one with God. Whether we believe it or not, the rules of Karma govern us all.

I am made to believe next life by the perception I acquired from various sources, however it is not conclusive. Soul leaves the physique because soul can live without physique/body but physique/body can not live without soul.

*edit*: oh when a person dies , the soul won't go straight to hell nor heaven ..it only happens in judgment day!

Hello, well I believe in predestination-the life after death. For me, its when our god decides for us where we go to either the paradise or hell. It's all upon peoples attitude, them doing right and wrong and having the faith in our god!
