Biodiversity is the outcome of mutation and selection.
New forms evolve from the preexisting ones. They adapt and survive and reproduce and perpetuate. All this is the essence of the theory of evolution.

Biodiversity can mean a couple of things:
[1] the number of different species there are in a given environment
[2] the genetic diversity within a species/population.

These have different significance WRT evolution:
[1] evolution explains why there are so many species, as each has evolved independently to fill a particular niche.
[2] genetic diversity is required for evolution. If all members of a particular population had exactly the same genes, there would be nothing for selective pressures to act on; there would be no individuals with a selective advantage to become more predominant.

When a new species is evolved (if you will), this leads to biodiversity. There would be two species now as opposed to 1 species earlier.

But there is more to it than that. Evolution theory says that after a mutation in a member of a species, that member will propagate if they have a selective advantage -or- if they are able to adapt. New species adapt by finding new sources of food, taking up new habitats, etc. All of these things lead to biodiversity.

biodiversity is basically how many different types of living things are in an environment. The theory of evolution tries to explain WHY there are so many different types of living things.

the theory says if there is a viable ecological niche it will be filled sooner or later. Also look up adaptive radiation, a well known example is the variety of marsupials in Australia.
