It's all about the mass of the water it displaces. If the ship were a solid ball or sphere, it would sink like a rock - or like a metal ball. But because the ship is shaped like it is, it displaces an amount of water equal to the ship's mass and still has ship left over sticking out of the water. Very cool. A heavier ship will sit lower in the water, but the extra will still stick out of the water.

if the steel is shaped to displace a volumn of water of greater mass than the steel then it will float.

its all about density and buoyancy, since the ship is so massive, its mass relative to its size isn't that much.

there is air inside the hull. For boats. thus their combine density will be lower.
