They don't. It is either due to the behavior of bad pet owners, the perceptions of bad pet owners, or both.

BAD OWNERS. Many times people do not give the animals what they need to be stable and happy. Too many people neglect them, do not give them proper training and exercise which allows their natural instincts to take over.

good and bad are human concepts and animals are neither capable of good acts or bad acts. they can act in a way that is perceived as bad to us, or they can act in a way we call good
training is important with pets, as is good husbandry and hygiene
they need lots of time spent with them.
the once friendly hamster who now bites, doesn't bite because it is bad, it bites through mishandling, or lack of attention or through illness. dogs which bite people are mainly that way through encouragement of aggression or abuse such as kicking or slapping.
