The systems includes but is not limited to
1.
Operating Systems: Primarily Linux , Secondarily Windows.
2.
Applications (WebServers, DatabaseServers, DNS, Mail). Good experience and understanding of these is a must.
3.
Custom Applications (In-house developed): Only with a good understanding of the applications the system administrator can make the right decisions about the growth of the infrastructure. The candidate should be able to understand how the programmes work.
4.
Appliances (Barracuda, Network Switches, SAN switches, Routers)
5.
High Availability, Load Balancing and Firewall: These are the crucial corner stones of the infrastructure. The candidate should have atleast some practical experience with them.
6.
Backup and Restoring of data. Experience with a commercial backup application is required. We use Computer Associate's ArcServ for backup.
7.
Scripting/Automization of the tasks. Good knowledge and experience with a shell scripting language is a must. We primarily use Perl for the system administration scripts.
The system administrator is not responsible to design infrastructure but should be flexible to learn new infrastructure introduced by the development or deployment team.
The system administrator is also responsible for scheduling and maintainance tasks to the network or the systems.
The system administrator works together with the helpdesk team, programming team and reports to the C.T.O.
The system administrator also will be responsible for the systems during off-hours in case of an emergency. This on-call duty will be shared by the System administrator and others in the team. When on-call it is the responsibilty of the system administrator to be reachable.

That depends on the system, but it's typically a server administration type of job. It may be processing file share security requests, maintaining and/or repairing servers, administration of a messaging system (Exchange, Lotus Notes, etc), some database maintenance, server configuration and deployment, Active Directory administration of group policies, user accounts, distribution lists, security groups, and the like. Maybe setting up print queues, managing scheduled processes, running backup and restore jobs, and the list goes on and on and on.
