I have an old house (built in 1891) and most walls are lathing and plaster. Also interested in finding the cost of installing ceiling fixtures, as the only lighting in bedrooms is from lamps. There IS a lightswitch routed to an outlet for the lamps. Located near Twin Cities, MN.

There are too may variable here to give an accurate estimate.
How is the new wire going to be routed? Is there an attic above the ceiling or a finished floor ? How much plaster repair will there be? How many fixtures? It sounds like you could run the new line from the switch controlled wall outlet, but the outlet would then go off when you turn off the light. A new phone jack does not have to be installed by an electrician and is usually not very expensive (around $100). The electrical work could run over $1000 - get estimates

In my recent experience, electricians charge by the hour plus materials. The last electician I used charged $95 an hour. I suggest you call a few reputable electicians and get some estimates.

Most work by the hour. They will usually come out and give you an estimate for the job without charge. There a lot of variables in hourly rate but $25-50 is a good range.

I know electricians that charge 60 just to change out an outlet. Depending how many you have and the condition your existing wire is can change the price.

It'll run about $100 an hour, and your project sounds like a lot of hours. But there is nothing involved that you cannot do yourself, with a bit of study and some ingenuity. The other gotcha is that the cost of wire has skyrocketed of late, so materials will be costly.

Call a couple local electricians for free estimates. No one can tell you over the internet without seeing the job.

$25-50/hour??? Not an electrical contractor. That was 3 years ago, maybe. You could probably find someone who wanted to do the job on the side and they might charge $25-50/hr.

Many of those older homes have outdated wiring, a good electrician may need to rewire your entire house to current code. Can get very expensive.
