It's a good idea. Anyone who says otherwise has no experience with anyone living on the street. There has been a safe injection site in Vancouver for a few years now, and although it's in danger of being shut down, it has been a wonderful thing.
1) It instills a sense of normality in the lives of these addicts. While for most this won't matter, for every ten that come in, there will be one who truly wishes to be clean, and this is the first step.
2) It keeps the needles and drug items off the streets. The things there are disposed of properly.
3) It contains and prevents the spread of AIDs through unclean needles.
4) It provides on-site medical treatment, taking the strain off ambulances that may have other things to do.
Tell me how any one of these things are bad, please.
Also, a safe injection site doesn't really encourage use. You can't get your drugs there, or anywhere near there. You also can't come in whenever you want to do your drugs, only during 3 sessions a day.

Why? Aw man... I'm smarter than you'll ever be (well, strictly statistically speaking, maybe you're within the top 3 percentile too)... but dang, i'm a heroin addict not to forget crack and all that nice stuff... boy did I ever love shoving that needle in my vein... I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada where they have InSite (the same in san fran) and this place is saving lives... at the very least its creating places for ex addicts to work, at the very most its saving people from O/Ding in the middle of the streets causing alley congestion (lol)... and in middle ground, its showing these junkies what regular people look like after they break free of their addiction, and that glimmer of hope is sometimes just enough to get them to walk through the doors of detox... I've been through rehab, and OMG have I met some cool, smart, interesting and wise people when they're sober, and then I've seen them go out and get high again, and become another faceless skid... but during that sober time, they truly showed me what they were capable of underneath the dingy clothes, and that impressed even a childhood prodigy like me...

It is worth the effort if for no other reason than that it keeps them from stealing and robbing which ruins other 's lives. They often get hooked when they are too young to exercise good judgment. The real answer to the problem is to make illegal drug selling a capital offense. Maybe give them a warning and a second chance, but that is the end of life for the dealer.

I think they had one in Sydney (Australia) at some point. Bad move.
I don't think i'd like to be strolling down the street past the drop-in with my children in toe....
Would the addicts actually ever leave the rooms? Doped up on whatever. God! we arest people for selling it, for hold in on their person and yet we give them a place to inject. Mmmm, gee is it me or don't the numbers add up here?!

They are not giving you the complete story. The real problem that they are attempting to control is AIDS.

They aren't filth. They are just as valuable as any other human being.
I see pros and cons to this.
