does the new employer know whether you get terminated or left?

These days, most employers are so worried about getting sued that they will say very little. Usually they will verify you worked for them by stating your start date, your end date, and not much else.
Most employers only know what you tell them. By running a credit check on you and looking at (and checking out) your length of employment at your previous jobs is a good enough indication for most of them to make a decision as to your character in addition to how well the interview itself went.

they aren't supposed to, but word always leaks out. Somebody always knows somebody who will let it slip.
If you're in a state that has "work at will" laws, it doesn't matter if a person was terminated or not.

A good and experienced interview can tell if you aren't being honest.
