It mean that by eliminating all but one possibility, then that one possibility must (not bust) be true.

Like if the was a murder and there are ten suspects. One of the ten must be the killer. By proving nine of the suspects 100% innocent, the last suspect has to be the killer.

This is Holmes method of getting to the truth. Technically this is called Deductive Analysis. Out of the various probable solutions you go on eliminating the ones which give improper results. After all the wrong ones are eliminated you will be left with only one solution which will be the correct solution to the hypothesis.

Is this an actual question, or do you know and are just testing us?

I know, I consider myself a Sherlock Holmes Aficionado. "However improbable" was added after remains because essentially there is no way to remove evidence from a crime, or anything you are using deductive reasoning to solve. There are always multiple solutions presented and one of them is always right, and even if it is hard to believe, if no other evidence can be found to the contrary, that is the solution.

It means follow the evidence instead of trying to prove a point.
