If you just took it off for personal time, then I think you dont really have any claim. If you were hurt on the job, and have medical records and doctor evaluations to prove it, then you may have a case.

No ... your employer has no legal responsibility to rehire you, or reinstate you to your previous position after 18 months of leave (unless ... and I stress this is a big 'unless' ... you have a legally binding contract from your employer stating they will reinstate you to your position in such a circumstance ... I doubt that is the case though).

Unless you were out due to military service, they are not required to hire you back. The maximum they have to hold your job open is 6 monnths, and that's only if you are out for medical reasons.
