I have this fourth cousin who was raised in a home where his mother didn't pay much attention to him. He doesn't take showers or cut his hair, and he makes weird jokes that no one ever understands. But he has no idea what people think about him whatsoever. He really doesn't understand why he should take a shower more than once a week, or wash his clothes, or put on deoderant. He is one of the happiest people I know. Also, it seems like the more I read and learn about the world or about anything, the more I realize that there is so much out there that I still don't know, and it's discouraging sometimes.

Not really.
To be ignorant does not mean that you are not intelligent , it means you lack the knowledge about a particular subject.
So, you have the intelligence to react to a good or a bad situation and that makes you vulnerable to swinging moods.
For example :
I am ignorant about the way of stock market strategies and invest in shares - end result is pain.
I am ignorant about business strategies and i start a venture - end result is pain.
I am ignorant about a nations culture and i visit it meeting the local people behaving without sensitivity - the end result will be bad.
I am ignorant about traffic laws and take to freeway- you can guess what will happen.
If the question would have been 'is innocence really bliss?' then i would have voted yes.
Picture it yourself - one is ignorant and the other innocent.
who would you vote as blissful?

I would any day suffer knowingly and look for remedy, rather than be blissfully ignorant. In the long run, ignorance invariably proves to be a curse, since it affords no opportunity to address future perils brewing up under its cover of apparent bliss. Knowledge is our greatest tool for survival as well as progress/improvement. It is our accumulated superior knowledge as well as the intelligence to acquire more of it, that makes us the best of the species on earth.
In my view therefore, ignorance is no REAL bliss since it is inherently short lived...... anything 'real' must be lasting.

there is a really cool documentary called 'stupidity'
some argue that stupidity causes all the trouble, and some actually believe that intelligence does
i don't even know
stupid people (or just people that don't think too much) seem to be happy all the time as well as confident
but then i have seen some people ending up very sad because they thought they were great and it wasn't true
cause happiness is not about living in a lala land,
i think that intelligence is great...we just have to learn how to balance ourselves and take some time to eliminate negative thoughts, it's hard though
:)

It's a big reason why there are so many druggies out there.
Also, why do you think the supposed downfall of man originated with eating from the tree of knowledge?

Mmmm... Rather than call it ignorance, I'd better call it 'selfish'? The mean to care only on our happiness -- because we actually cannot make any other person except ourselves to be happy, only they can make themselves happy... so when people say 'I'll be happy if you do this and do that' its kinda lying

Yes! It truly is. When intelligence goes up, happiness usually goes down.
