You definitely have to watch Fullmetal Alchemist. It has all the qualities of an excellent anime. It's packed full of humour, adventure, fighting, drama, and it deals with very mature issues like death and resurrection. It is definitely an anime that should be at the top of your list to watch! =)
Another good anime that fits into those categories is Scrapped Princess. It's somewhat like Fullmetal alchemist in that it deals with mature/serious issues, and it also has very good fight scenes, and it's just a great watch overall. I recommend you watch this anime too. =)

Switch (Has 2 OVA) Plot-wise it's not really similar, but the way the story flows and the atmosphere is done, it's similar. Both are shounen too, though in the anime Switch has more fanservice towards female audience whereas Death Note is more for male audiences. [Idk about the manga] Kai is a newbie in the Narcotics Control Division of the Tokyo Police and works with Hal, the polar opposite of the naive and inexperienced Kai. In the anime, they're undercover spies who are trying to find the source and provider of a new and highly addictive drug "Funny Angel". That's the only one I know that's short/ shorter than Death Note... You can find more in the list I gave you in the sources, but most are longer than Death Note's length. There's also Code Geass, but it's not short at all... It's 25 episodes each season. There're 2 seasons so there's a total of 50 episodes.
