There is no difference. Some prefer to call it a disorder and some refer it to a illness. They are both terms that refer to a psychological or physiological pattern that is not part of "normal development"

A disorder is a set of symptoms. A mental illness means something about the cause is known.

Mental disorders usually are treated with medication that helps the disorder and the person gets better...perhaps they have to continue with the medication, but it works. With a mental disorder, the person is usually somewhat aware that they are acting differently than the norm.

Mental illness usually means the person is out of touch with reality.. In other words, they have no idea they are mentally ill or what signs of it they are showing.
