HISTORY (don't have to read it if you don't want to):
CLOSE friends for 3 yrs and he's secretly liked me but he never went for it b/c he thought the chances of being w. me were slim only to find out that after all this time, I felt the same way back - I was the first girl he fell in love with (both in our 20's and gave him his first kiss; no sex just kisses) BUT we decided to be friends and not to rush (i would be his first girlfriend and said he wanted somethinf more "real, long lasting" with me - "shy guy type") When things were getting normal, "life challenges" (death) and rumors/assumptions from friends made us drift apart (he pushed me away - didn't see or talk for about 4-5 months) and it created tension BUT rather than giving up or seeking revenge, we worked it out and everything is starting to be better than before, the relationship grew (this happened in a 9 month span)

It sounds like even more than love, the ambivalence hurts. You are obviously attracted to this person and have a bond that runs deeply. However, there is something in you that says, as you said, "Not now." Perhaps you should explore why that is.

Is it something with you (you don't want to be tied down yet, for instance)? Or something about him (he'd be a great dad)? Is the pain really from not being "with" him, or because you know, in the end, he's not really quite right but you still feel all this love and attachment anyway?

Love, relationships, and attachment are very complicated things. I wish you the best of luck.
