Go to the menu and click 'insert'. Then click 'object'. Under the 'create new' tab select 'Microsoft equation 3.0'.
If this isn't in the list then it needs to be installed first.

near the bottom left you will see a button for the square root type symbols. Click that then select the one that looks like a square root.

i'm sure there is symbol notation, they tell you this in the symbol section.

Go to insert on those top menus. Click on symbol, the square root sign is near the bottom I believe. Also there are other characters and symbols you may find useful many times in the future.
once there, if you really feel like memorizing the symbol shortcut keys, they tell you on the bottom right of that symbol box that pops up.
But you probably shouldn't need to be typing often with square roots. If it's math, you should use paper and pencil.

I realize this is an old question, but if you're still wondering how to accomplish this, you can type 221A and then press and hold Alt and tap x. That will convert the 221A into a square root symbol. This method can be used for most symbols outside of the normal ASCII range. Check the Insert Symbol section. The shortcut keys to get there next time will be listed on the bottom.

It depends on Microsoft what?

Word - insert, symbol, square root sign
Excel - insert, symbol, square root sign

Any other MS products might be the same - but I am not sure. Hope that helps.

On your Word standard menu, pick Insert ---> Object ----> microsoft equation

If you dont have microsoft equation equation in your choices then you will have to install it from your MS Office CDROM.

or you might want to use ** or ^. like 3**1/2 or 3^1/2. they just mean "raised to the power of"

or if you want to really make your work really look "old school" and you don't mind the extra effort. try using the back slash, forward slash and underscore symbols, like so. works for square root because you dont have to put in the no 2

. ______
\/ 121

putting a space between the slashes

3 _____
\ / 125

and typing the root number in smaller font and lowered position in line(using the format font menu choices) with the underscore could work.

Click on 'insert" then click "symbol" on the menu. A dialog box pops up, showing various symbols from which you can choose. If you'll be using the symbol frequently, you can assign a shortcut key to it. make sure the shortcut key combination does not conflict with the built in shortcut keys. In my case, I use Ctrl + Alt + R
