Imagine that you are trying to determine what path to take, but you can only see the one step in front of you at a time. You choose that step based on which one looks best, then you can see the next one. You can't possibly determine which step to take based on the outcome.
Natural selection cannot see the end product, so each step needs to have benefit in order to be selected.

Natural selection, while attempting to adapt living organisms more efficiently to existing conditions, also must contend with the law of entropy, which is the exception that proves the rule.
In other words, many mutations are negative or debilitating, but capricious changes in environment can change the value of a particular mutation for a certain environment and make that differentiator a net positive for the organism. This tension between the two forces creates the diversity that we see.

Natural selection is the process that weeds out individuals unfit for their environment, and thus leaves more fit individuals to produce offspring. However, the environment is in a constant state of flux, and as the environment changes, so too will the traits (and individuals that have them) that are best suited for it.
