Well, black people's skin can absorb UV rays better than other, lighter-coloured skin; natives squint like Asians because that's where they originated (can't remember the crossing, but it was in Alaska and it linked to Asia millenia ago). Natural selection allows populations to adapt to the specific environments in which they live. Since populations of organisms live in varying environments, populations have different combinations of traits. Diversity is beneficial to a species because diverse populations are more likely to have some members survive when environmental conditions change. And, sooner or later, environmental conditions will always change.

It doesn't. Mutation leads to diversity. Natural selection tends to eliminate those mutations that are not of benefit to the organism (at that particular place and time.)
