I suppose you have to define your terms. Being a 'conservative' isn't the same as being a 'reactionary' as are the current movers and shakers of the GOP. None of these guys are 'Eisenhower' republicans, not Nixon republicans and certanly not Jerry Ford republicans. I don't think anyone ever accused these three of being anything but middle of the road republicans and none of them were 'radicals' either. As for the term 'lib' or liberal, the right wing of the current GOP, the only wing there is, has managed to create the perfect strawman. The fact that no such a critter exists or did exist in American politics not withstanding. The right wing talk show propagandists and FOX have used this term to smear and discredit everyone 'not a card carrying 'conservative'. They ain't kiddin' when they say, ''yer either for us or against us'! No matter what these people say, the truth is that there's been no 'left' in US politcs since the 30's. To be a 'lib' all you have to do is to think or say anything contrary to what ever the radio blowhards say. As far as percentages are concerned a fair percent of college are people consider themselves independents....a percent are registered democrats and some are 'republicans' in the 'Eisenhower' sense. I suspect a few, particularly graduates of schools like the University in Utah and Bob Jones, Regent and Liberty tend to be far right, but for the most part there really aren't many hard core reactionaries...but they are well organized and they have their incredable propaganda machine constantly running at high RPM's. Very dangerous people...try not to vote for them!

Opinions aside, here are the facts from my university (a large public school).
According to a campus-wide poll, 23% of the students identify themselves as "liberal" or "very liberal". In contrast, 5% identify themselves as "conservative" or "very conservative". 13% described themselves as "moderate", while a whopping 51% did not mark any affiliation at all. The remaining 8% marked "other".
Even though I'm outnumbered (I marked "conservative"), I don't feel like the school is significantly contributing to the political climate among the students. I was conservative before I got here. My friends are mostly liberal, and they were liberal before they got here. Half the students still don't care about politics at all. I think the stats are mostly a reflection of the age group and not the university.

College teaches people to think, to handle facts, to analyze facts and to base conclusions on the scientific method. That is how liberal positions are developed. Conservatives begin with whatever conclusion they want and then create whatever "facts" they need to justify their position. Just last weekend I attended a conference on global warming presented by real, live scientists--they are quite sure its happening, there is no evidence to the contrary. Yet listen to the conservatives on CNN Headline News or in radio and they freely lie and say either that global warming is not happening, or that scientists aren't sure about it. They ARE. It is amazing so many people want to believe lies.

Education makes us think about the issues and shows us more perspectives. Calling college a breeding ground for libs is a com job by the drive be media. A educated person will look at a problem and decide the best way to solve it. Conservatives fear educated people who follow the truth not what a radio/tv host tells you.

The problem with this question is that it assumes a false correlation.
A higher percentage of liberals who graduated from college doesn't mean that it was college that led them to their beliefs or that they were indoctrinated and brainwashed.
With that said,
I am totally liberal and totally have my BA and am working up the courage to send in grad school applications for an MA.

I don't know the exact percentages--but on average, liberals are better educated.
BUT--with few exceptions, colleges are not "liberal breeding grounds" as such--or conservative, for that mattter. There are a few exceptions on both sides--but they are not considered good schools.
However--part of the difinition--and reality--ofliberalism is being "open minded and open to new ideas." That is also true of some conservatives--and, by the same token, there are a few (very few, in the US) left-wing types who are as narrow-minded as any member of theKKK.
That being said--colleges do tend to "liberalize" people--simply because they are all about learning new ideas and challing old ones. Students who do well are almost certainly going to learn to be openminded and receptive to new ideas.
Also--in college students who have grown up in environments mostly with people like themselves find themselves in a social world with people of different backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, etc. It's hard to retain stereotypes about people who are different when you see and work with them every day and discover they are just as capable as you are.
