My room mate is in one. The guys in it are cool, but their attitudes are pretty cliche for being a douche bag. Typical frat guys.

I grew up in the city of a major university and had many dealings with fraternities and sororities in many different areas, generally employment/entertainment.

The mentality is that of an exclusive neighborhood with strict neighborhood controls (elites versus the riffraff).
They are very much like the clubs at the time (1960's) that catered to whites only yet hired black entertainers, cooks and others, however, today money/social position is the dividing factor instead of race.

My university only has one frat and one sorority, and since we're located in the middle of the city, there isn't much room for any major Greek mishaps — as far as I know.

The concept of a frat or a sorority is OK, although I prefer clubs based on a unifying thought or cause instead of just a formal clique. The real issue is hazing.

My mother was in a sorority when she attended college in the 1940s. Back then, it was a way to meet other young women and make friends. There wasn't really all this partying and drinking going on. That didn't start up until years later.

They are harmful. They divide students on US and THEM. Also, they promote comformism. Students learn how to obey a majority.
