It depends where you are from. Boston is the most European-style city in the USA; a greater percentage of people actually walk to work there than in any other large American city (one would think it would be bicycle-friendly but it is not) and it is full of history. No need for a car as it has a good public transit system. But if L.a. or Dallas or Miami is your kind of city Boston is the opposite.

Actually, you should consider it to be "Boston and Cambridge". Both cities are unique, both currently very prosperous, both expensive, divided by a river.

However, please know that your real problem may be just getting to Boston after you land. Skybus does not go to Boston -- it flies to the little Portsmouth, New Hampshire, airport, about 60 miles away. There is no public transit as far as I know from the airport if you are not renting a car.
For Boston connections you will need to rent a cab to go to Portsmouth downtown (bus to Boston) or to Exeter (Amtrak to Boston - 5 trains a day) or to Newburyport (MBTA trains to Boston - run every othr hour or more). The cab fare to Newburyport may be as much as your airline tickets!
