Like NJ's cost of living is too high, compared to CA. Why the huge gap? What is the reasoning behind this? Any sort of help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you're close to NYC, unions have a big impact on wages. Wages and benefits are much higher which makes goods and services higher, which requires higher wages ....

But I thought the cost of living was pretty high in California, especially real estate.

Really, I thought CA was more expensive when I was out there. I've lived in PA, MA, and CA. Of course, prices vary from town to town. And the closer you are to New York City, the higher prices will be, because many people commute into the city for work.

In addition to all of the above, I think you also tend to get more public services in the East compared to the West. Public services and schools in California are strangled due to Proposition 13.

We are also running out of space to build new homes, so the price of land has gone up.

The reason why the east coast is more expensive is because the minimum wage is higher out east then it is in the west. :)
i live out east! its not too bad. :)

Mostly it is due to a lot of people crowded into a small space.
