so my sister is having this masque for halloween and i've got a mask that i wanted to elaborate on...namely by painting the mask from white to black. i tried spray painting it, but because it's made from the shiny plastic, the paint wont dry and (after 1.5 days) keeps rubbing off (i kinda expected that, but thought i'd give it a try anyway). i thought that i might cover it in paper mache and then painting it after that.
#1-would paper mache actually stick to the plastic like that?
#2-what is the ratio of water/flour and should i add starch? if so, how much?
#3-got any other ideas on how to make this work? the mask i have is perfect as far as shape goes (it's a cat) but i just wanted it black...
Thanks in advance!! :)

Believe it or not, there is a way to paint it black and have the paint stick!
What you need to do is pick up a can of spray adhesive. Most craft stores, or even paint shops will sell it. All it does is adhere to any surface and make it sticky so that paint that is sprayed on that area will adhere. It should be pretty easy to find.

Covering it in papier mache will make it go lumpy. Just get a bit of fine sandpaper and rough up the surface of the mask a little; that'll help the paint to stick, and to smooth it over the top of that, use some enamel on top of the dried paint.

I'm not sure how thick th eplastic is, but a mache mixture affixed to the surface followed by a 30-second microwave stint might help, then let it cool. Be careful if the plastic is too thin not to try this.

what i think would be a good idea is, have you ever bought plasta strips? well you could use them to cover it. you simply place them in water and add it around the mask, 360degrees. it would stick to the plastic and would have a smoother texture then using paper mache. Worse comes to worse, i suggest going to a hardware store and asking someone there, just tell them its a slippery surface, they should know what to do.

They sell spray paint for plastic. You just got the wrong kind. Go to home depot and look for the stuff that says it's specifically for plastic. It will work fine.

Here one I got off the net:
Paste
1 cup cold water
1 cup flour
2 1/2 cups boiling water
1 T. powdered alum
3/4 tsp. oil of wintergreen
Mix the cold water and flour together, stirring until smooth.
Add the boiling water and mix well. Pour the mixture into the top of a double boiler.
Cook over low heat until smooth. Add the alum and stir.
Remove from heat. When the mixture is cool, add the oil of wintergreen.
