Don't worry.
The key word is "may".

In reality, immigration authorities almost never check. If they do, I'm sure it is sufficient for you to show your ticket ... this will "prove" that you don't plan to stay/settle in Cambodia, but only intend to visit.

I just got back from Phnom Penh. There's no problem at all. They barely asked anything at the immigration. If you're asked about your accommodation and return ticket, just explain about your arrangement. But I don't think it'd happen. Immigration in Asia tend to be more lax than in the US and Europe. Don't worry about it.

Enjoy your trip.
