When a company does a background check for employment, how much if any of my military service is available or is that even part of the check

That's not a part of a background check. For most background checks, your company pays the state police to check your records, which are basically just your criminal file, if you have any. Really, that's all they are checking. Some might go as far as checking your credit rating, but that really depends on the type of job you are applying for. I work for a museum that hosts thousands of school kids every year for field trips. Our background checks are very basic. We just check to make sure incoming staff don't have criminal records or anything having to do with children.

As far as the military thing goes, you have the option of showing your employer your DD Form 214 (discharge papers), but you are not required to. In fact, when filling out an application, you are not even required to answer why you left past employments, and they can't push the issue to ask you why. Employers can't even legally ask former employers your work history any more. These days, most employers, depending on where you live, are only allowed to answer "yes he worked here, from this date until this date", and that's it.

Since the 9/11 tragedy military affiliation searches are no longer a part of a background check. You can find out what is on your background check here: http://www.eFindOutTheTruth.com

Obviously, you have something to hide.

Typically, most companies do not do a military background check. Those that do, don't know the "codes" on the discharge paperwork. I wouldn't worry too much.

most companies will inquire if you were in the military. if you say no, most of the time even if you were, their background check will NOT show your service (unless you got a dishonourable discharge, a criminal conviction, or sometimes a bad conduct discharge).

if you are applying for a job that requires any sort of governmental security clearance, you can rest assured they will find out if you were in the military

I'd assume most background checks are looking for legal actions.

However, I've heard that discharges (whether honorable or less than honorable) can follow you around. Not sure if it shows up on the check though.

A background check will show your military service and what type of discharge you received.

The ones I am familiar with are a 7 year criminal records check in your state, and if fingerprinted, an FBI check on any activity in the central registry.

I don't know the answer to your question. Many public libraries have an Employment Coordinator.
