We had to make root barriers for the neighbor's bamboo that was invading our Tiff sod. We found some different solutions and I will share those with you. For our problem, we didn't need a real deep barrier because bamboo's root system is a ryzome system. So we used 12" roof flashing and shoved it into the dirt near our fence in a line.

For small roots and spreading ground covers, confine the plants to pots with mulch over the top so the containers are not visable.

For larger plants, use 6mm plastic sheeting or landscape material which will allow oxygen to get to a plants roots but will keep other plants from spreading into the area.

For large areas, you can pour a concrete trench down as low as you need it to go for a particular root system. Be aware though that concrete will inhibit other plants growth for up to a year due to the lime content in the concrete.

Metal flashing as deep as needed. It is impermeable.

There are also chemicals available that will hinder roots from spreading.

Rhizome Barrier

We have done studies with many other sources and found that the 30 mil or 0.76mm is great at diverting bamboo rhizomes. Why pay more for thicker plastic barrier when all it has to do is divert the rhizome. If a vendor has 40 or 60 mil barrier that is what they try to sell you. We stock 40 mil also, but I do not push it. We can stock any thickness we desire, but have found the 30 mil to be all you need to divert rhizome growth so why pay more.

SEE THE PHOTOS OF THE WIDTH OF THE BARRIER gardners of any experience KNOWS that the rhizomes on bamboo grow deep and wide.
You would do well if you are planning on planting bamboo to open this link and RESEARCH first.

The Master Gardner who answered forgot to mention the spreading aspects such as DEEP
Bamboo:
Has two basic types of root systems, running and clumping.
( Running) bamboos are referred to as leptomorph and (spread in) dimensions of (feet )while (clumping) bamboos, with pachymorph rhizomes, (spread) in terms of (inches.)

Not being a master gardner I realize many methods of barriers are used. Plastic or plastic bags won't do the job for things that spread like running bamboo. They recommend the type in the link above or building a 3 foot deep concrete barrier.

If You have construction going on in your area where they are using metal decking, You might see if they have any cut ends. Local Hospital was being built and they where placing metal decking down before pouring concrete, had pieces left over around 3 -4 ft long. I placed then end to end and used metal screws on seams to hold each piece together. Works great!!

I understand the economy is crap right now but in order for your baby to be healthy she needs fruits & veggies to grow correctly. Have you applied for WIC where you live? A baby cannot possibly thrive on noodles & chicken. I do have one idea though; can you grow a garden where you live, meaning right now? I know it would take a while but then it would obviously be WAY cheaper.
