I have asked this same question, when I was a child, some 40 yrs ago, we had good toast, we seem to have lost that ability due to bagels and pop tarts. the spaces are wider and do not brown the bread properly.

Because you can toast other things like english muffins that need a hotter setting to brown them.

same reason they have stereos that make you go deaf? and cars that go way over the speed limit?! although if you ever get poisoned they say to eat charcol or burnt toast to absorb the poison!
