Ping is a command to send a packet of data to a particular system. It is a tool used to test network connectivity.

You don't use it get an ip address from your router, you would use it to test if your router is connected and accepting information from your computer.

To run the command, simply type: ping

You should get either response from the system or a message that the host was unreachable

Missy:

ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network.

It works by sending “echo request” to the target host and listening back for a response.

How to ping. Go to Start, run and type CMD. When the window open type..

ipconfig/all that will show your IP address of your computer. Write it down. It will also give you all the other useful information you might need to configure your network.

If you have any additional question fire it away.

Cesar

Ping, while a powerful tool for us who needs and understood the use of it this program merely tells you if the network is up and ready to go from your side, and the answer is obviously not so far. It is not for getting addresses.

You should have no need of doing any kind of configuration in a normal setup today; why not reset everything and follow the manual precisely?

Ping is used in the internet community to see how long it takes a signal to get from one computer to another.

If you know how to use the 'Command Prompt' you can ping a site like www.cnn.com ( very common ) and see how long it takes your command to reach there.

Command prompt is found by clicking START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES

When you click it, you get a little black box with your C:\ prompt

at the end of the C:\ prompt line type ping tuscow.com

You'll get three jumps and an average in ms ( milliseconds)

If you are really bored you can see where your signal goes by typing

tracert tuscow.com and see how many places your signal must go through on the internet before reaching tuscow.

You'll going to be surprised the route your question has to travel to get there.
