If I told you that I finally started my restaurant and it was thriving well (no, I didn't yet), that wouldn't be bragging, that would be sharing information with a friend that has similar interests. If I told a friend who has failed 4-5 times at starting a business "that" would be bragging. It's not what is in the message, but, what's in the heart of the messenger. We can pick and choose who we share good news with. It's called tactfulness. If we pick the wrong person due to stupidity, or lack of personal info???? Then the receiver of the news should just shake their head in pity, not label them a braggart! Don't get me wrong!! There are braggart's out there! One uppers that if you told them you have a new toy, must come back with "I've got a bigger, better toy! I just don't see this problem too much in my circle of friends.

It depends on your tone and timing. If you talk about your great new boyfriend in front of your friend you just got dumped, it may be conceived as bragging because of the timing. But if you choose the same topic with someone who is suppose to be happy....and she tells you, you are bragging, she may just be jealous. I think its a fine line and so long as you aren't a jerk and you do not act better then anyone, you aren't doing anything wrong. Maybe just misunderstood.

No, though that is a tempting and beguiling perspective! Bragging is immodestly crowing about your accomplishments and attributing them entirely to yourself. Whether or not you are bragging to someone who is jealous of you is irrelevant, though bragging to a jealous person would be particularly insensitive. You could be bragging to others who are not jealous and who love you. It is still bragging and most people would find it irritating and unbecoming. Although it may be unintended, bragging is often perceived as expressing that you are better than others, and no one wants to feel that they just might be the "others."

I think there is a big difference between "bragging" and sharing your happiness about something.
When it gets to the point of bragging it's just you trying to make someone feel small or jealous.

i disagree..bragging is something that comes out from someones character to polish his reputation. it has nothing to do with the people receiving it at a certain circumstance. i may brag how expensive my shoes are but you re not actually interested on them, thus making my words a piece of mediocrity. so its not entirely good news on general perspective. or whatever, i know i am not making sense!

No.

Bragging is sharing good news so as to make someone jealous.

It is selling yourself in the experience.

The good news gets dwarfed in that instance.
