Most clogs result from an excess of tissue--a problem that's easily resolved. Partial clogs usually require a closet auger. If the problem is in the drain line and out of reach, you may need a longer snake or a professional drain-line service.
If your plumbing fixtures drain slowly, the problem may be a clogged vent. (soil stack) This happens when vents are improperly located and when birds or animals deposit debris in the vent where it exits the roof.

Could be something in the line. In a rental house I have a kid put a toy in the toilet and that was a mess! Could be a tree root in the line too. Also you could have a septic tank and drain field problem. New toilets don't flush with as much water so it's also possible to just put to much paper in the thing. Put some drain cleaner in the pipes and maybe that will help. Read the directions because some can't be pored into the toilet. Put it in a sink drain on the same line if you can.

The most common cause is that something like a pencil or a comb went part way down and stuck at the wax ring at the floor level. then it is much easier to plug the toilet with loads that normally would be easily handled. To prove this you need to remove the toilet. This type of stoppage would be immediately visible. A little bother but then you can also snake the system from there if needed.

I just had the same problem and the cause of my problem was tree roots.
Had to remove my sewer lines and replace with new lines. They were so clogged only water could get through.
Run a plumbers snake down your sewer lines and see if you can unstop them. If you run into a block that won't budge check for tree roots.
Hope this helps.

Do you have any kids at home? Kids coming over? Do you keep cans of hair spray etc over the toilet, on the back lid ?

These are all problems for toilet plugs. I have found covers for spray cans that go into the "S" trap of the toilet and float there, they stop the toilet up and just sit there. Kids are good for tossing things like this in the toilet, from cell phones to tos, they'll do the same, they float in the "S" trap and keep plugging it up.

You can try this.

simply enough as it sounds, something is clogging it. You might be able to use what is called a "Snake" to unstop it yourself, or it might be so bad that you need to call out Roto-Rooter.
There could be a object lodged halfway through the pipe that is helping to block it up at times. Its really hard to say exactly what the problem could be.

The sewer line between your toilet and the street may be blocked or partially blocked. Typically, tree or plant roots get in there and block the flow. You first should call a plumber or drain service to clean it out.

It could be tree roots in the main drain. Is it the same toilet or are there any problems with tub draining slow or sinks? You may have to have pipes rodded out. Not costly. Check yellow pages. there should be several to choose from

If you have a toddler, they love to drop pens or pencils down and they clog quite nicely.
