Doesn't matter why he has the last name he does, the important thing is do you want to carry his name? I would never get married without taking my husband's name and I think it is awful the way the world has gone hyphenated and caused so much confusion with their kid's names and who has a clue which name the kid's should carry when you have 4 last names, two for your mom and two for your dad. Sorry, I just think that is plain goofy. No one loses their identity by taking their husband's name, only if they choose to.

You can use the mothers or fathers last name and if you would like you can keep your own last name and finally your soon to be husband can take your last name as well if that is what you want to do. Really you have several options to choose from.

It's totally up to you guys. I think officially you take whatever his legal last name is, so his mother's maiden name. But if you don't want to do that discuss it with him and you both decide what to do.

an option would be to take his last name and your last name and merge them together to form something new. You are a new family unit, its not just Mrs Smith any more. Its now Jones (his last name) - Smith (your last name). Both of you would be known as
Kitty and Red Jones-Smith

He keeps his last name (it is his last name after all) and you (just like everyone else) decide if you want to take his name or keep your own.
Why would he change his name to his father's if he didn't grow up with his fathers last name?

Taking a last name is a personal preference.
If you are going to take his then you take the one he goes by at the time of your marriage.
