Downloading movies for free is illegal, unless you allready own the movie and are simply making a copy. You can however, reduce the cost of a movie by purchasing it used (usually from a rental store like Blockbuster) and these places have great warrenties on their movies, (mine is guarenteed for like 90 days) so if it stops working they will replace it with another one. I usually purchase these movies for around 3-7 dollars depending on the newness of the movie.
This is the best and legal way to do it.

First of all, it's illegal. But if you want to take any chances with that anyways, go and get a torrent program, such a UTorrent, and go to a website such as isohunter or piratebay.org and download the link for whatever movie you want. Open the link with UTorrent, and wait 30days or so to seed the whole movie.

Downloading movies is illegal and frowned upon. You can be convicted of copyright infringement, and if found guilty of distributing movies, you can be imprisoned.
However.... STREAMING movies is a different topic. There's quite a bit of difference there; streaming is perfectly legal - check out Yahoo! LaunchCast Radio for example. You cannot be convicted as the end user. There is a rather nice site for this, it's called "TVlinks", run a search and check it out.

don't download. all you need is handbrake, (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) to encrypt and dvd 43 (http://www.dvd43.com/) to get rid of the protection from the dvd. all you do is you go rent a dvd, save it to your hard drive, using handbrake and dvd43. then using whatever burning software you got, burn it from your hard drive to your disk. better qualiy than downloading...
