I didn't mean that they were doling out the pills i just meant that it's absurd like most have said. But if they can't go to their parents ask for advice then they should go to the nurse but they should have the parents with them when they ask. In 2000 they put out condoms in that nurse station. But the parents should have a say whether or not their child gets a physical or not.

I agree with most on here. It is ridiculous and it is the parents responsibility. That being said... How many of you on here could forge your parents name or had a friend or older sibling that could when you were that age??? Be honest. I know I could by then. For any teen, where there's a will, there's a way. Now here's a Q. Did ya know if you suspect your teen (minor child) is using drugs, take him/her to the Dr. for testing, that Dr. DOES NOT have to reveal test results to you even though you are the parent. PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY! Go figure. Dealing with that now with our youngest.

It should be shocking and it should be appauling - but folks it's a sad reality that girls as young as 11 are engaging in sexual activity. They don't at all understand what they are getting themselves into and cannot count on Mom and Dad to explain it to them.
Unfortuneately these children are getting their information from friends and the internet instead of from the two people who are supposed to be guiding them through life - THEIR PARENTS! Parents are still under the archaic belief that if they don't talk to their kids about it they just won't do it....wrong.

I think that the school is at least showing some responsibility to a problem that is existing in their school system - they are having 7 graders giving birth for pete sake! I have a 7th grader - and I coach a 7th graders....anyone with eyeballs and a brain can see that they are not in the position to be engaging in sex and definitely not to raise a child. At least a door has been opened to them where a responsible adult will talk to them about sex because obviously the parents aren't willing to!

I hate that it has to happen - but I would much rather see a middle school with a birth control center than a clinic to treat STD's and a daycare to handle the babies of students.

It's almost like they are encouraging sex by offering the pill to them without parental consent. Just a thought but with all the violence in the schools these days maybe the message here is "MAKE LOVE NOT WAR." With that message and the obvious peer pressure that goes along with it and all the emotional baggage that follows intimate relationships, are these kids going to be headed for even more problems that they are not equipped to deal with psychologically, emotionally and physically? I say yes. So many kids these days are already on prescription drugs for depression, anxiety and insomnia. What happened to childhood? The next thing we will hear is they will be giving out weed also to really get the party going. Don't mean to make light of a serious situation, but one has to have a sense of humor these days.

No one thinks middle school kids should be having sex. The question is whether or not we can or should allow them access to birth control. The school board answered yes, because they already have to have their parents permission to use the nurses facilities anyway.
In a perfect world (which we do not live in), children would not be having sex or if they did they would go to their parents for advice. We do not live in a perfect world. The nurse stated that at least five children were sexually active. It has to be better to make birth control available to these young people than to have them get pregnant. Wouldn't we rather have them on the pill than to have babies or abortions?

And now, for the REST OF THE STORY. According to Fox news on line - birth control prescriptions will be given after a student undergoes a physical exam by a physician or nurse practitioner. And students treated at the centers must first get written parental permission. So, it is the same as if the students were taken to the family doctor by their parents.

Of course, this situation is appalling, and shocking. But your question (leaving out the necessary details to keep it so sensational) makes it sound as though the Middle School is going room-to-room doling out birth control pills from a basket to every student in the building. The facts are that they are not.

I too saw the news article. The Principle claims that for many, the school's clinic is as close as they will ever come to healthcare. The parents have to sign a permission slip for their kids to be treated, but then, the clinic is not required to notify the parents about their treatment? What a crock! What ever happened to parental rights and responsibility? Out the freakin' window with Schrillary's "It takes a village!"
What do I think? I think it's criminal. Parents NEED to start being responsible and start parenting their children! An 11 y/o is not equipped mentally or emotionally to deal with life altering decisions. And if they're having sex at that age, then at least one parent needs to be shot.

I think it's weird. 11 year olds shouldn't be having sex. Then again, that is up to how their parents taught them. Some might not have even been told by their parents not to have sex. It all depends. It's good in that the school is about protection but it's crazy that it's to 11 year olds. They should try giving that out to hs students. :P they seem to be the ones having all the babies. at least from what i hear.

Most children won't go to parents. They go to friend or somebody else thats close. If they can legally do this, which I think being a minor a school nurse should contact them before giving out BCP or female or male condoms.

"i do no longer want some college respected to offer my daughter beginning administration w/o my awareness. i'm able to’t think of how this could ensue." - it won't be able to. beginning administration pills require a prescription from a doctor. As such they are in a position to purely be "given out" by making use of a authorized pharmacy. "My niece's father is death of maximum cancers. Her college councilor says she would be in a position to't talk grief themes, purely educ themes together with her." - looks like that counselor is there to help scholars with acedemics and is no longer a greif counselor or different psychological heath expert. As such, it relatively is superb that the counselor evade those themes. "At 11 she would be in a position to’t bypass to the college councilor for grief & trauma over dropping a father in 6 mo yet she is the right age for the college to offer her beginning administration?" - See my first comments. "So few faculties tutor examining, writing, math and technology, relatively they concentration on "experience good" crap." - undecided what you're basing this fact on. the present criticism of the faculties is they're required to "tutor the attempt" for the checks mandated by making use of the "No baby left at the back of act" and diverse state required checks. those checks talk examining, writing, math and technology. "in line with probability if faculties went back to being tutorial establishments relatively of attempting to be a chum, we would have fewer 11 year olds getting preg." - If we had greater mom and dad attempting to be mom and dad relatively of acquaintances we would have fewer pregnancies by making use of 11 & 12 year olds and youth. "additionally, how stupid could a parent seem in the event that they take the baby to the dr. & they did no longer be attentive to the baby grew to become into on the pill?" & "What if the baby develops diabetes or is taking meds that decrease the effectiveness of the pill?" - This drives homestead my subject with the mummy and dad. If their baby has seen a doctor at the back of their back, have been given a prescription, gained the pills from a pharmacy and effectively hidden them at homestead i think of the mummy and dad are greater to blame than the college that isn't in touch.

If a twelve year old is irresponsible enough to be having sex then what makes the school board think they will be responsible enough to take the pill?
